What is the difference between ink cartridges and toner cartridges?
First of all, don’t worry too much about whether you need a toner or an ink cartridge. The model name and number of the printer gives you all the information you need to find the correct replacement ink. Anyone who sells manufacturer or compatible ink cartridges will state which make and model of printer they’ll fit. Online, all you’ll need to do at a good ink supply site is select your printer from a table or a list and suitable products will pop up.
So most of us will never really need to know the difference. However, the ink/toner question is a good piece of trivia for the pub and answering it will also help you understand more about how printers work. In that spirit, it’s worth finding out.
When you write with a biro, ink flows from the pen onto the paper, but it is also pressed into the paper by the nib. The pressure makes the ink more likely to stay put and less likely to run or smear. Most printers that take ink cartridges work in the same way. Liquid ink is applied then pushed into the paper.
Printers that use toner work differently. The toner isn’t actually a liquid but a powder. It’s sprayed onto the paper in tiny dots, then a laser is used to cook it onto the paper rather than press it on. The toner powder melts with heat and sinks into the paper.
Most of us have noticed how warm a stack of freshly printed pages can be. That heat can be generated by electronics at work, but most often it’s down the laser cooking process. There is also a particular smell given off by the hot toner that anyone who has worked in an office will instantly recognise, even if they don’t quite know what it is.
